The 30-Day Family Challenge

What happens when an entire family goes phone-free at dinner for a month

890+ families completed this challenge

Day 1 was survival. Day 30 was a celebration. Everything in between was transformation.

We challenged ourselves: 30 days, no phones at dinner. All four of us — two parents, two teenagers. Here's what happened, week by week.

Week 1 was painful. Our 15-year-old literally asked if this was legal. Our 13-year-old said she'd rather eat in her room. My husband kept reaching into his pocket like a phantom-phone reflex. I caught myself three times sneaking a glance at my Apple Watch.

By day 8, the silence wasn't awkward anymore. It had become space — space for words that had been waiting years to be said.

Week 2, something cracked open. Our 13-year-old mentioned a boy at school she liked. Our 15-year-old talked about feeling pressured about college. These weren't dinner-table conversations we'd ever had before. The phone hadn't just been a distraction — it had been a shield.

Week 3, dinner started lasting longer. Not because we had to, but because we wanted to. One night, we stayed at the table for 90 minutes playing a questions game. 'What's your earliest memory?' 'What's one thing you'd change about our family?' 'What are you most afraid of?' We learned more about our kids in one week than we had in the previous year.

Week 4, nobody mentioned the challenge anymore. It had stopped being a challenge and started being our life. On day 30, I asked if everyone wanted to go back to phones at dinner. My 15-year-old — the same one who asked if the challenge was legal — said, 'Why would we?'

We're on day 187 now. Family First tracks it for us — the app celebrated our 100-day streak with a little animation that made my daughter smile. We'll never go back.
